Computer screen ergonomics

By

Have you ever found yourself squinting to read the computer screen? How about having a burning sensation in your eyes after you read the screen? Eye fatigue is a common symptom of reading a computer screen. It is often caused from the screen being too bright and the room being too dark.

If you start to experience eye fatigue from your computer screen, you will most likely have problems with headaches, neck cramps, and visual distortion. Do not turn to caffeine to make your eyes refocus. What you need to do is take a break from your computer and allow your eyes to rest. If you try to work through the eye fatigue, you will find that you are less productive because you are constantly having to re-read the information on the screen. You might also find that you have to keep rubbing your eyes because they get blurry.

Practice proper computer screen ergonomics. This will happen when you set your computer screen to be in line with your eyes. You should not need to look up or down to see the screen. It should all be clearly visible. Make sure your arms are at a 90 degree angle and that you are sitting at least 1-2 feet away from the screen. Being too close to the screen will give you eye fatigue problems, so will being too far away from the screen.

Wear computer vision glasses if you do a lot of typing. The computer vision glasses are useful because they have a slight tint to them, making the computer screen just a little darker. This reduces the glare from the screen that can damage your eyes. The computer vision glasses also have a small prescription, usually about 0.25. This allows you to see the screen a little better. You can purchase computer vision glasses for about $35.

Always take good care of your eyes. You need to rest your eyes in order to properly take care of them. Try to get consistent sleep each night. About 8-10 hours is the recommended amount of rest you need for healthy eyes. When your eyes start to hurt, take a short 15 minute nap. Place some cucumber slices on the eyes and focus on deep breathing and relaxing (cucumbers help to reduce the puffiness under the eyes).

Eat a good diet. Many people will tell you that carrots are good for the eyes because they have Vitamin A. While eating carrots is a great idea, eating an overall good diet will improve your eye fatigue. Always drink plenty of water because it helps to flush the toxins out of the body.

If experience multiple headaches, be sure to visit your doctor. You may have a problem with the optic nerve. You might also have a serious problem like a brain tumor. If migraines and headaches run in your family, it is important to seek treatment because they will hinder your ability to perform daily tasks.

If you feel like your eyes are drying out, use some eye drops. People that sit n front of computer screens and spend time reading a lot will have trouble with dry eyes. You will also experience dry eyes if you have allergies. If you don't keep your eyes moist, they will start to itch and burn and this can cause serious problems, especially if you run the eyes and scratch the cornea. Use some tap water to flush out the eyes and to get the pollen off the eye. Eye drops can also do the same thing but water works great if you don't have any eye drops with you.
