  • Tennis balls
  • Tennis court
  • Tennis shoes or comfortable shoes
  • Water bottle

Step by step

Step one

Start out by choosing the right racket and court for the type of tennis you like to play. You can play tennis on a clay court, a grass court, a back yard, or just about anywhere you see fit.

Step two

There are many different types of tennis games. There are the ones you set the way you want, the pros way, and the standard way. However, all of these have a basic way of scoring.

A set is the first part to know about how the game of tennis is scored. The set is the number of games that will be played in order to determine the winner of the game. An example of this would be a set of six. Then six games would be played, and the player who wins the most out of those six games would win. That is how the round or total game is scored. Then you have the smaller games inside the set. These individual games are scored differently.

Step three

When you are scoring the individual games it is done a little differently because this is where the rules of the game come in to play. The scoring comes from the play.

Step four

Where the game is played on the court. The white line at the back is the end line. The two white lines are called the sidelines. In between the two white sidelines is called the lane. You will want to stand at the serving line. The serving line is the short line in the back. The other person will want to stay free toward the back of their lane.

Step five

Now it is time to serve up the ball. This is done by standing on the right or left side of the serving line. The side you stand on will depend on the direction you want the ball to go. When you serve, you are serving to the opposite side of the court. Therefore if you want to serve to the right side of the court, you would stand on the left of the serve line.

Then you will simply toss the ball up in the air, and hit it with the racket. This will of course take some practice. The ball has to end up on your opponents serving lane to count as an in. Then the other player will be hitting the ball back to you. This will continue until a score is made.

Step six

A score is made by one of you or the other, by the other player missing the ball, and then you would say 15, love. This would then mean that you have one point. The scoring happens in this type of counting. Starting with 15, 30, 40, and then end for a total of the points to win the game.

Step seven

If you are playing with the type add, then it is necessary that you win by at least two points. Say for instance that you both make it to 40 love, then you will say deuce. Then after you serve, and you make the next point, then you would want to say add in. If the other player says add out, then you are back to deuce. This process can go on for a bit, however it does end.

Step eight

After you have played all six of these independent games you are good to say who won. The person, who wins, has to win by two games.

Overall tips and warnings

  • Drink plenty of water, especially on hot days.
  • Hitting the ball cross-court helps. This way your opponent has to work harder to get to the ball.
  • Do not over hit the ball, because this will hit the ball out of the court.
