Kaplan University was founded in 1937. In the beginning, Kaplan University had colleges located throughout the United States. They decided to add an online campus so that they could offer non-traditional students the same type of quality education that traditional students receive. To do this Kaplan University began offering classes through the internet rather than just on campus so that people who had family and work obligations could attend school during times that were convenient for them.

Mission:
Kaplan University's mission is to provide their students with an innovative education, no matter what level of education they are seeking. The programs that Kaplan University offers are designed to provide the students with various learning opportunities which are designed to help launch their new careers, enhance their current careers or even allow the to change careers in today's.

Purposes:
To accomplish their mission Kaplan University has established the following purposes:

  •     All programs that they provide will be developed and assessed by the faculty and staff, in addition to members of educational, professional, and business communities.
  •     Instruction that is provided both on campus and online will be intensive and comprehensive so that it strengthens the students' academic achievement.
  •     All students will be instilled with the value of lifelong learning through stimulation of their intellectual curiosity, creative and critical thinking, and their awareness of culture and diversity.
  •     Help students develop a professional attitude. Also, help them develop the values, skills, and strategies that they are going to need to make it their chosen careers and their everyday life.
  •     Prepare their students for how they can survive in a changing community and how they can adapt to the future when it changes.
  •     Everything that is planned and provided, including facilities, is done to meet the needs of the students, staff, and faculty of Kaplan University.



Credibility:
Kaplan University online is an accredited online university. The Higher Learning Commission accredits them; they are also a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Admissions:
When obtaining information on the area of study that you are interested in you are going to be matched with an advisor that specializes in the area of study that you are interested in. This will allow you to receive as much detailed information as possible before you enroll. The advisor that you are matched with will interview you to find out what it is you are looking for and will then answer all of your questions. Kaplan University has a full disclosure policy, which ensures that you get all of the information that is important to helping you make your decision.

Once you have enrolled in Kaplan University you will be assigned a different advisor who will be there for you until you have completed your program. This advisor can help you with any questions in your area of study that might come up, including what requirements you need to meet before you can graduate. Or if you can take classes out of order and most importantly making sure you complete everything you need to graduate.

In order to be admitted to Kaplan University online if you plan to be an undergraduate you are going to need to have either your high school diploma or your GED. You can also have some of your previous college credits transferred to Kaplan University but beware that not all credits can be transferred and they will be evaluated before you are accepted into the University's program.

If you plan to join Kaplan University's graduate program you are going to need to have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college. In addition to that, bachelor's degree you also need to have a 2.5 GPA upon graduation from your bachelor's degree program of choice.

Kaplan University's certificate program requires that you have either a high school diploma or a GED before you can be admitted. However, in some cases the certificate program is going to require that you have an associate's degree as well.

If you plan to obtain your law degree from Kaplan University online, you will be getting that degree through Concord Law School. Kaplan University acquired Concord Law School on the fall of 2007 and is one of the few online schools that now offer you the chance to get an online law degree. In order to enter into the law school you are going to need to pass an admissions test and provide your college transcripts from all of the colleges that you have attended. In order to get further information on how to get into the law degree program you will need to speak to an admissions representative.

Accessibility:
Students that attend Kaplan University online can access the school's website at their convenience. This allows the non-traditional student the flexibility of attending classes and studying during the hours that are most convenient for them. The classes that are offered online are the same quality of classes that are available to traditional students on campus, which means doing it when it is convenient rather than having to shuffle your schedule around is not going to make a difference as to the type of education that you receive.

Rather than sitting in a traditional classroom listening to lectures and having group discussions you will be using Kaplan University's software to communicate with your instructor and other classmates. You can communicate with them through email, discussion boards, web field trips, and seminars.


Cost:
Attending Kaplan University as an undergraduate, your books and course materials are included in the price of tuition. When you enroll at Kaplan University you will are required to pay a $45 deposit, which will then be credited to your tuition once you begin taking classes. You are also going to have to pay a $100 technology fee each term. However, if you are obtaining your MBA or Master of Science in Management that fee will be cut in half, so you will only need to pay $50 each term. Here is a look at how much you will be paying per credit for the various programs at Kaplan University online:

  •     Undergraduate programs - $353 per credit - Associate Degrees are typically 90 credits and Bachelor Degrees are 180 credits.
  •     Graduate education programs - $350 per credit
  •     Master of Science in Criminal Justice - $350 per credit
  •     Master of Science in Nursing - $350 per credit
  •     Master of Science in Information Technology - $365 per credit
  •     Master of Science in Management - $420 per credit
  •     Master of Business Administration - $420 per credit
  •     Active-duty military, including National Guard and Reserve units that are in drill status - $166 per credit for all undergraduate programs
  •     Military veterans - $230 per credit for all undergraduate programs


Financial aid:
With Kaplan University you do not have to enroll until after all of your financing is completed, this allows you to understand all of the details with your finacing so that you are not going into this decision with the thought of things changing. Kaplan University provides you with a Tuition Wizard that allows you to see the cost of the program that you have chosen. In addition to that, you can also see how much will be funded by financial aid, scholarships, or by you. This allows you to see where and how your money will be spent and gives, you time to obtain other means of financing your education.

Similar to traditional schools Kaplan University online also offers its students access to financial aid counselors. These counselors are there to help students find a way to pay for their schooling or to help them organize the various types of funding that they have available to help pay for their education. The most common types of financial aid that students will receive at Kaplan University are federal grants, loans, and work study programs. Kaplan University also allows students to receive special military assistance, and students are encouraged to apply for any scholarships that might be available to them. If all else, fails the financial aid counselors can also provide students with information on alternative education loan lenders, these lenders specialize in providing funding for students who are not attending traditional colleges.

What they offer:
Kaplan University offers the same courses online that are available for students to take at the school's various campuses. They offer certificate, associate, bachelors, and master degree programs, which means they have something for everybody. Kaplan University offers eight different schools that you can choose your degree from, which are School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Criminal Justice, School of Education, School of Information Systems and Technology, School of Nursing, School of Health Sciences, and School of Legal Studies.
